What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. It begins with a build-up of plaque along the gumline. If plaque is not removed it hardens into tartar, which irritates the gum and triggers an immune response. In its early stage, known as gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily when brushed.
Left untreated, gingivitis progresses to periodontitis. The infection spreads below the gumline, breaking down the bone and connective tissue that anchor the teeth. At this stage teeth can become loose and may eventually need to be removed.
Signs You May Have Gum Disease
Gums that bleed when you brush or floss
Red, swollen, or tender gums
Persistent bad breath that does not resolve with brushing
Gums that appear to be pulling away from the teeth
Teeth that feel loose or have shifted position
Sensitivity along the gumline
Bleeding gums are not normal. If you notice any of these signs, book an appointment as soon as possible. The earlier gum disease is caught, the simpler the treatment.
