What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge spans the gap left by one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth, known as pontics, held in place by crowns fitted over the teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth, called abutment teeth, are shaped to accommodate the crowns that anchor the bridge in position.

The result is a fixed restoration that fills the gap, restores your bite, and blends naturally with the surrounding teeth. Unlike a denture, a bridge is bonded permanently in place and does not need to be removed for cleaning.

Types of Bridge We Offer

Traditional bridge

The most commonly placed type. Two crowns are fitted over the teeth either side of the gap, with an artificial tooth suspended between them. Suitable where there are healthy teeth on both sides of the space.

Cantilever bridge

Used where there is only one suitable supporting tooth on one side of the gap. Less commonly used than a traditional bridge and typically reserved for specific situations.

Implant-supported bridge

Where the neighbouring teeth are healthy and should not be prepared, one or more dental implants can be used as anchors instead. This avoids altering the surrounding teeth entirely. Vishal will discuss this option where appropriate.

At your consultation we assess the gap, the condition of the surrounding teeth, and your overall oral health before recommending the most appropriate type of bridge for your situation.

Is a Dental Bridge Right for Me?

A dental bridge may be the right option if:

You have one or more missing teeth and want a fixed solution

The teeth on either side of the gap are healthy and strong enough to support a bridge

You want to avoid implant surgery

You want to restore your bite and prevent neighbouring teeth from shifting into the gap

You are looking for a restoration that can be completed without a lengthy treatment timeline

If the neighbouring teeth are healthy and untouched, a dental implant may be a more conservative long-term option as it does not require those teeth to be prepared. We discuss both options at your consultation so you can make an informed decision.

Your Treatment Journey

  1. Step one

    Consultation and assessment

We assess the gap, the condition of the supporting teeth, and your overall oral health. A written quote is provided before you commit to anything.

  2. Step two

    Tooth preparation

The abutment teeth on either side of the gap are shaped to accommodate the crowns that will anchor the bridge. An impression or digital scan is taken and sent to our dental laboratory.

  3. Step three

    Temporary bridge

A temporary bridge is fitted to protect the prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is being made, typically for one to two weeks.

  4. Step four

    Fitting

Your permanent bridge is checked for fit, bite, and shade before being bonded into place.

  5. Step five

    Review

We check your bite and make any fine adjustments. A follow-up is scheduled to assess the long-term result.

Frequently asked questions

We understand you may have questions before booking. Here are some of the most common.

How long does a dental bridge last?

A well-maintained bridge can last ten to fifteen years or more. Good oral hygiene, regular check-ups, and keeping the area underneath the bridge clean are key to longevity.

Costs vary depending on the number of teeth being replaced and the type of bridge involved. A written breakdown is provided at your consultation before anything is confirmed. 0% finance is available. Call us now or see our fees page for more detail.

The area is numbed before any preparation begins. Most patients find the procedure comfortable throughout. Some sensitivity in the days following is normal and settles quickly. Sedation is available for anxious patients.

A bridge uses the neighbouring teeth as anchors, which requires them to be shaped and reduced. A dental implant replaces the tooth independently, leaving the surrounding teeth untouched. We discuss both options at your consultation.

Brush as normal and use floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean underneath the bridge where it meets the gum. Your hygienist will demonstrate the best technique at your hygienist appointment.

Most patients with healthy teeth on either side of the gap are suitable. If you would prefer not to alter the neighbouring teeth, a dental implant may be a better option. We discuss all alternatives at your consultation.
