You may need a crown if your tooth is cracked, heavily filled, worn down from grinding, or has been treated with a root canal. Crowns can also be used to support a dental bridge or cover a dental implant. If a tooth is misshapen or discoloured and cannot be improved with whitening, a crown may be recommended for aesthetic reasons as well.
Crowns can be made from porcelain, ceramic, composite resin, metal alloys, or a combination of these. Dr Shah and his team will help you choose the most suitable material based on the tooth’s location, your bite, and how visible the crown will be when you smile. Placing a crown typically takes two visits. During the first visit, we prepare the tooth by gently shaping it and removing any damaged areas. An impression is taken so your crown can be made to fit precisely. You’ll be fitted with a temporary crown to protect the tooth while the permanent one is being crafted.
At your second visit, we check the fit and colour of your new crown and make any small adjustments before bonding it securely in place. Once fitted, your crown should feel just like a natural tooth and, with good care, can last many years.
