When saving the tooth isn’t an option, we’re here to help

At Woodberry Down Dental Practice, our priority is to preserve your natural teeth. However, there are times when a tooth is too damaged to be saved. In these cases, a gentle, professionally performed extraction may be the best way to prevent further discomfort or infection.

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth from its socket. This is typically done under local anaesthetic to ensure you do not feel pain. In some cases, especially for multiple extractions or anxious patients, sedation or general anaesthetic may be used.

Before proceeding, we will carefully assess your tooth and surrounding tissue to ensure the extraction is as straightforward and comfortable as possible.

Why might a tooth need to be removed?

Tooth extractions are only recommended when there is no alternative. Common reasons include:

  • Severe tooth decay or damage beyond repair
  • An abscess or infection that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
  • Overcrowding, often in preparation for orthodontic treatment
  • Gum disease that has weakened the tooth and supporting structures
  • Impacted or infected wisdom teeth
  • Risk of infection in patients with compromised immune systems

What about wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the large molars at the back of your mouth that often emerge in your late teens or early twenties. In many cases, they cause problems due to lack of space, becoming impacted or infected. If your wisdom teeth need to be removed, we will talk you through the process, including sedation options and aftercare

What can I expect during and after the procedure?

The extraction itself is typically quick and straightforward. Here’s what you can expect:

  • The area is numbed using a local anaesthetic
  • The tooth is gently loosened and removed
  • You will receive detailed aftercare instructions to support healing

Following the procedure, you may be advised to rest, avoid hard foods and hot drinks, and keep the area clean. We are here to answer any questions you have before or after the appointment.

Caring for your mouth post-extraction

Removing a tooth will create changes in your mouth. You may experience temporary swelling, bleeding, or discomfort, but this should settle with the right aftercare. We’ll provide personalised advice and talk to you about replacement options if needed, such as dentures, bridges, or dental implants.
