Quick, comfortable treatment that helps you avoid extractions.
When a tooth becomes infected or inflamed at the root, a root canal can save it from extraction and help you avoid future complications. At Woodberry Down Dental Practice, we offer gentle, effective root canal treatment to remove infection, relieve pain, and preserve your natural smile.
Root canals may have a daunting reputation, but with modern techniques and expert care, they are more straightforward and comfortable than ever.
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure used to treat infection inside a tooth. The infection typically affects the dental pulp, which is the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels.
Bacteria can reach the pulp through deep decay, cracked teeth, or leaky fillings. If left untreated, the infection can spread, leading to pain, swelling, and eventually tooth loss.
During the procedure, the infected pulp is carefully removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and sealed with a filling. In many cases, a crown is placed over the tooth to strengthen it and restore full function.
A root canal is usually needed when dental X-rays or symptoms indicate the pulp has become infected or damaged.
Signs you may need treatment include:
Sometimes symptoms disappear as the pulp dies, but this doesn’t mean the infection is gone. It may continue to spread through the root canal system and into surrounding tissues, so early treatment is always best.
Many people are surprised by how comfortable root canal treatment is. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you shouldn’t feel pain during the process. It is designed to stop pain, not cause it.
You may feel some sensitivity for a few days afterwards, particularly if the tooth was already causing discomfort. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter or prescribed medication, and Dr Shah and his team will advise you on how to take care of the tooth as it heals.
After a successful root canal, your tooth may feel slightly different from your others for a while, but this usually settles. In most cases, we recommend placing a crown on the treated tooth to protect it and restore full strength and function.
With proper care, a root canal-treated tooth can last for many years, often a decade or more.
